Overview |
1. Ordinary Supermen
NASA selects seven men to become the country's first astronauts. They're all test pilots all too familiar with risking their lives but none of them have ever ridden a rocket before. NASA and the Mercury Seven are on a journey into the unknown. No one knows for sure if the rockets will explode on the pad or if the astronauts can survive the stresses of travelling more than 17,000 miles an hour. Six of the men ride into space, each launch taking NASA further forward in their quest to conquer space.
2. Friends and Rivals
Nine new astronauts arrive at NASA - their mission, to take the first steps towards landing a man on the moon. This is Project Gemini; named after the zodiac's sign for the twins. The project is going to launch two men into space at the same time. In secret, Ed White trains for NASA's first spacewalk; his fellow recruits, led by Mercury veterans, bring two orbiting spaceships within inches of each other. Some of the most famous astronauts of all time come together in Project Gemini - Jim Lovell, Buzz Aldrin, and Neil Armstrong.
