Overview
Polar Series $5 Silver Proof Coin - Antarctic Explorers (2009)

The Polar series has been very popular among collectors all over the world. Continuing the series from the sold out 2007 $1 uncirculated coin and the 2008 $5 Silver Proof Antarctic Territories (Skua) we now release the 2009 $5 Silver Proof Antarctic Explorers coin.

The coin design by Wojciech Pietranik features members of the 1907–09 Ernest Shackleton Expedition. Sir Douglas Mawson, accompanied by Tannat Edgeworth David and Forbes Mackay, were the first group to reach the South Magnetic Pole. Later the Australian Antarctic Expedition laid the foundations for Australia’s continued research and Antarctic exploration as detailed in the background design of this coin.

The Australian Antarctic Territory is part of our collective national pride and continues to fascinate. This $5 silver proof coin will be an enduring reminder of Australia’s historical and adventurous association with the most extreme and hostile environment on earth.
