$25 Silver Hologram Coin - Cross Country Skiing (2009)
12th coin in this historic & unique 15-coin hologram series
Cross-country skiing has been around for millennia. Prehistoric cave drawings in Russia show hunters gliding on skis. Skis were an essential form of transportation for the Swiss army during the 16th century. By 1767, the Norwegian army was holding official competitions and, in 1843, that same country held the first civilian cross-country ski event.
A test of physical & mental endurance, cross-country skiing was part of the first Olympic Winter Games in 1924. Men competed in 18- and 50-kilometre races, and the women’s Olympic sport event was added in 1952.
This coin captures the energy & speed of cross country skiing. |
